They develop in pairs within protective double-celled capsules, and are born both blind and sexually mature. The cells trap microscopic organisms for them to feed upon until they are ready to emerge. As they seek open water, they each leave behind a fertilized egg for the next generation. Dublids continue to feed on microscopic life forms throughout their solitary adult lives. They also remain completely blind. Although this makes them easy to net, they do not travel in schools, which makes them difficult to find. Dublids often grow to lengths of twenty falos. Their smooth outer flesh is used to make water tight pouches and rain basins. Their meat is high in nutrients. Their soft bones are twisted and bound in order to make vermin traps. This was my first attempt at creating a unique system of reproduction. I wanted these organisms to be simple, symmetrical, and functional. I chose to add them to the other life forms already mentioned in my story, The Code of Gulldune, in order to give them a useful purpose to other species." |
