Cloaked by shadow
At the entrance to his burrow
Among the talos train of rock
Eyeing the ooze of alpenglow
For Solere's golden form to show
Awaits a spiderhawk

Chrysonusa sparverius
Endemic to vertiginous
Spires of the Vensu range
Where sylvan evergreens
Meet flinty fringe of rugged scree
Upon the mountain face

When the Sky Serpent peaks the heights
Altrasia blessed in his shine
Spiderhawk crawls out, spreads his wings
To warm himself in daybreak's light
Begins to spin to pass the time
The webnet for hunting he'll bring

Once the northern night's chill subsides
Spiderhawk moves to a ledge nearby
To gaze down on the timberline
Observing the meadow below
Edged among the kurj and kedrose
Through his large almond-shaped eyes

As life stirs in the blossom sea
Full of lavlac and kaskatoon berries,
Colupine and alpenglory
From his perch, with his hawksight
Chrysonusa spies a drakokite
Buzzing the blooms to feed

With sudden increase in the breeze
Off the outcrop spiderhawk leaps
His webnet held 'tween back legs tight
Tucked up close to his underside
'Neath his wings feels the warm wind's sigh
Towards Solere he turns and flies

Into Sky Serpent's light he climbs
Gliding upon a thermal rise
Then circles back to the meadow
Finds his target, the drakokite
Among some flitting flutterflies
Flower dancing below

Masked by Solere's radiant gleam
The spiderhawk hovers briefly
Above his unwary quarry
Then folding wings in close
Chrysonusa drops like a stone
Free falling for the field unseen

Drakokite rests on lavlac leaf
Before the next sweet nectar meal
When, like lightning out of the sky
Spiderhawk comes, net opened wide
Captures the surprised drakokite
And flies home with his feast wrapped tight ....
